Outsport for EuroGames – Main ConferenceSport as the next challenge towards gender equality and LGBTI-inclusive communities

Outsport is the first European project tackling discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity in sport through scientific research and pedagogical approaches. It’s promoted by AICS and its LGBTI department Gaycs. Outsport is co-funded by the EU through the Erasmus+ Program and it is carried out by a consortium of 5 project partners from Italy, Scotland, Hungary, Germany and Austria. Thanks to the cooperation among Outsport and Roma EuroGames 2019, the Outsport EuroGames Conference will be the main cultural event of the Roma EuroGames 2019, which will host the final discussion on the main topics of the cultural program and the final reports of the specific workshops.

10:00 – 11:15 – Roundtable – From Stonewall to EuroGames: The role of Sport in the upcoming intersectional challenges of the LGBTI movement

This panel will involve activists and historical figures of the LGBTI sport movement as a tribute to the fiftieth Stonewall anniversary. What has changed in the LGBTI movement from Stonewall to the beginning of LGBTI sports organizations? What was their contribution? An overview of the possible contribution of Sport in the most important worldwide challenges of the LGBTI movement will be outlined, especially visibility, education and multiple discrimination.

This panel will show the results of the Outsport Europe-wide survey (http://www.out-sport.eu/research) regarding the experience of LGBTI people in sport, carried out by the University of Cologne as Outsport partner. Starting from this data, which are the first in Europe concerning the topic, experts and activists will discuss the challenges of LGBTI visibility in sports.

Conference – The legal protection of LGBTI people in the sporting world

The event is organized by Rete Lenford – Avvocatura per i diritti LGBTI –  in collaboration with Roma EuroGames 2019.

What is the nature and extent of discrimination in sport today?  How does discrimination affect people’s experience of sport and their wider lives?  What are the barriers on bodies and sexualities to change? How can homo-biphobia and transphobia be tackled in the future? These are some of the issues which we hope to explore within the planned speeches listed in the program below.

The second part of the event consists in the screening of the documentary “Il calciatore invisibile” (“The invisible football player” – 60 minutes) which, through the experience of a gay-friendly soccer team in Tuscany, investigates the issue of homosexuality in the world of football, among prejudice and stereotypes. Director Matteo Tortora and some of the protagonists of the documentary will be present.
